Meet "Martha"......
We found and purchased another rare 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible!
This is the first year for the Super Beetle Convertible...it is one of the most sought after VW Beetle Convertibles....
The serial number on the body and pan serial numbers match. We ordered the "Birth Certificate" from Germany. This Convertible was built on Thursday, July 22nd, 1971. The original factory colour was L11E, Lemon Yellow. The certificate states it is the upgraded "1302 LS" Model.
We located this car in the Boston, Mass. USA area, which is where it was shipped to when it was brand new. The owner stated that Martha had spent her whole life at "Martha's Vineyard"....and that is how she got her name.
The engine was examined, the oil was changed, along with the spark plugs. The wires seemed to be o.k for the "start up" test. We fed fresh fuel into the fuel pump line. After a few cranks and few encouraging words...she started up and idled fine! No smoke, no hesitation.
The previous owner told us the engine was professionally rebuilt shortly before it went into storage...that appears to be true.
We removed the engine, along with the bumpers, lights, fenders and interior to expose the amount of work that will be required to restore her to original condition. The original colour combination was Lemon Yellow, with a black top and black interior.
We assessed the replacement patch panels we required, and placed the metal order. The fabrication began. We started by removing the rear firewall support brackets and rotten rear parcel shelf. There was a large amount of fabrication to make Martha like new.....we replaced both heater channels and frame supports (the backbone of a Beetle Convertible). Several panels were replaced with new.
After the bodywork was completed, we painted Martha "Wimbledon White", and she looks great! We ordered new beige door panels, beige "basket weave" seat material, and a custom cloth beige convertible top along with a new high quality black carpet. We replaced all the brakes, brake lines and replaced the brake master cylinder. We sandblasted and painted a set of custom "A.T.S" "Period Correct" Alloy wheels, and installed brand new Goodyear Eagle "LS2" Tires.
We decided to upgrade the front drum brakes to front disc brakes. We also upgraded the standard steering wheel with a "banjo wheel". The front door panels were also upgraded to "mild custom" panels.
We also upgraded the convertible top from vinyl to a material top and it turned out great!
Martha is now complete, and available for sale through Last Chance's sales division!
