1966 Karmann Ghia Photo Gallery
This is a very rare car. A 1966 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe from San Fransisco, California.

The body has never been off of the factory chassis (pans) until now. It is a "numbers matching" chassis and body, but not the original engine. We will be restoring it to similar factory specifications, but with several upgrades.

This rare Karmann Ghia was originally sold in Jacksonville, Florida with a build date of October 29, 1965. This was verified by obtaining its "Birth Certificate" from Germany.

The engine is a factory replacement 1500 cc, however not the correct "numbers matching" original. We will be replacing the motor with a newer rebuilt 1641 cc and adding two dual carbs! It will make this Ghia fun to drive!

We will be upgrading the factory 6 Volt system to a modern 12 volt. It will also have a brand new complete wiring harness.

The original Cherry Red Volkswagen paint looked more like a red primer (which we do not care for). We painted this Ghia an authentic VW colour, "Ruby Red" (code #L456) which looks great!

Once the body was removed from the chassis, we completely rebuilt it, looks like new! The new aftermarket wheels are a copy of the upgraded alloy wheels from the late 60's and brand new properly sized tires have been added.

With the chassis completed, we turned our attention to the body shell. There was a large amount of fabrication required. We replace both heater channels, front firewall, and several smaller areas that required replacing.

Our next step was the smoothing, priming and block sanding of the body, doors, hood and engine lid. After numerous hours of sanding, the shell was painted!

The replacement engine was rebuilt. We made several upgrades along the way. The motor was installed to the transmission/chassis. The next step was to set the body back on the chassis.

We have set the car aside for now. We have a number of clients cars to work on for a while.

Can't wait to get back to this nice Karmann Ghia, stay tuned......
